MumAbroad: have no fear, you are not alone!

Moving to a foreign country, especially with children is no easy feat and believe me, I’ve done it a few times now having lived in the UK, France, New York and finally settling here in Valencia, Spain.

Where will they go to school, which education system should I choose? How am I going to find the right nanny, are we even going to speak the same language and be able to understand each other? How am I ever going to meet the right mums’ circle where I can have some fun and feel supported and at ease in this new city with my kids? When moving abroad these are just some out of the many challenges mums have to face and make difficult, life-changing decisions. It’s daunting and you can often feel very alone and isolated.

Fret no further, you are NOT alone. MumAbroad is a truly wonderful and helpful resource for any family looking to relocate and thanks to websites like these, all mums out there can be reassured and feel comforted to know that they do have the support that they need and that there are companies, websites and people out there happy to help you. MumAbroad even go as far to support women entrepreneurs with their “Women in Business” section.

MumAbroad was founded in 2007 by Rebecca Laidlaw and Carrie Frais, both working mums living just outside of Barcelona. With no extended family to help with childcare, they looked for other resources to help guide them through what was a very challenging period of their lives. Experiencing how difficult it was to find easily accessible information about activities and services for parents and their children, they soon saw the gap for an English language website which would offer parents from the International Community valuable information around important daily aspects such as child-related services, schools, family activities, healthcare and restaurants.

After extensive research and with the help of hundreds of mothers, ‘Barcelona Mum’ was born, offering a comprehensive and personalised guide to family life in Barcelona. Within a few months they changed the website to ‘MumAbroad Spain ‘ to incorporate the whole of Catalonia and subsequently Madrid, Andalucia, Valencia & the Costa Blanca and the Balearics. As the site gained momentum, MumAbroad France, MumAbroad Italy and MumAbroad Germany were established and in 2014 the four sites were combined.

“We believe that, in the majority of cases, parents are the best judge of anything child-related, so that is why our site is based purely on recommendation” Comments co-founder Carrie Frais. “Every service, group or activity on our website has been recommended by at least one Mum or Dad. In our blog, you can read about other mums’ experiences of living in Spain, Italy, France and Germany as well as interviews with a host of childhood experts. In our Women in Business section we’ve discovered some inspirational women, who have established successful businesses in and created a life for themselves, many of whom have had to juggle work and family life. Our facebook pages give parents a forum to share concerns, offer advice, advertise services, buy & sell items and meet in an online community. ”

Thank you MumAbroad, we’re so happy you’re here!
